I’m excited to be sharing an interview with a good friend of mine, Chase Monet, who’s just published her first book, “Secrets of a Cheating Heart.” She decided to go with a traditional publisher however, rather than self-publishing because she wanted to take advantage of the resources, experience, and promotional opportunities that come with traditionally publishing a book. Here’s what she had to tell me about the process and about her book.
Why did you decide to write a book?
I have always enjoyed writing and wanted the chance to be able to entertain readers with my work.
What is your first book about, and why did you pick that topic (without giving away too much of the plot).
The book is about a woman named Cheryl who is fed up with her husband’s lies and cheating ways. Her decision to leave him uncovers many secrets. Things eventually turn deadly and you learn that not everyone is who they seem to be when pushed to the edge.
Once your manuscript was accepted by a publisher, what was the process like?
Once my manuscript was accepted, I signed the contract and started developing a marketing strategy. The publishing company took care of everything else, such as editing the book and designing the cover, and they also booked promotional things for me, such as chat sessions and radio interviews.
If you’ve already published your first book, without giving any figures, how well has it sold?
Well the publishing company handles all of those details but I do know that my first day sales were pretty impressive – I ranked in the top #25 in Women’s fiction on Amazon. Since then I have been holding steady in the top 50 and the book has only been out a little less than a month. I have also gotten stellar reviews so far, so those that have purchased the book really enjoyed it and I am very pleased about that.
If I could do anything differently, I would have been more steadfast in my desire to reach publication. After a few submissions I kind of put things on the back burner. But in the end it all worked out because now I am with an amazing supportive publishing company!
Did you outsource any of the work on your book, such as the editing or cover design? If so, what?
The publishing company that I am signed with, Mahogany Red Books took care of all of that but I did have input on the cover design and my concept was used for the cover.
What’s the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone who wants to write a book?
The biggest piece of advice I would give is to take your time and don’t rush it. Thousands of books come out everyday so you need to find your own style that sets you apart.
You can find Chase’s book, “Secrets of a Cheating Heart,” on Amazon. If you’re a fan of women’s fiction, you will truly enjoy this book.
