If you’re trying to accomplish certain goals in your life, but you’re having problems breaking or building certain habits, read this book! This was the first book I read on Scribd, and it has had a profound impact on my life and the way I look at it.
What is the 5-Second Rule?
The 5-Second Rule helps you get the courage to act on your goals or things you know you need to do. When you feel the urge to act on a goal, just count down from five to yourself, and then make yourself do something to act on the goal. So far, I’ve used it to encourage myself to give the best customer service I possibly can when I answer a call at work. When a call comes in, I count backward from five to myself, then answer the call as politely as I can. It’s helped me provide the best customer service I can to every insurance agent and applicant that calls into my company. I’m able to focus on their needs while also making sure I follow the rules for every company we take calls for.
How can I apply it in my life?
You can use it to build good habits or break old ones. If you’ve wanted to contribute ideas at work but have been afraid to, at your next meeting count backward from five to yourself, then share your idea. People may laugh at you, but they may also like your ideas. If you do that every time you have an idea, your confidence will increase, and eventually, someone may like one of your ideas.

Mel Robbins does discuss a few other topics in “The Five Second Rule.” she discusses the importance of planning out your day, and doing the most important tasks first. Once you get the important tasks out of the way, you can focus on the less important ones. She suggests using the 5-Second Rule whenever you find yourself working on less important tasks when you haven’t finished your most important task. She also discusses the importance of planning your quitting time, and why it’s important to start your day correctly.
